Bluefaced Leicester Sheep wool

Renowned around the world for its exceptional softness and silky lustre, Bluefaced Leicester wool is one of Britain’s most highly prized fleeces. Often considered the luxury fibre of the British sheep industry, its long, fine fibres produce yarns with beautiful drape, strength and a distinctive natural sheen. Whether spun for elegant garments, luxury scarves or woven into refined interior textiles, Bluefaced Leicester wool offers outstanding quality and showcases the very best of British wool craftsmanship.

A Brief History

The Bluefaced Leicester is one of Britain’s most respected sheep breeds and is renowned for producing some of the finest longwool available. Developed in Northumberland during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries from the original Dishley Leicester sheep, breeders carefully selected animals for their finer fleece, elegant appearance and exceptional breeding qualities.

Today, the Bluefaced Leicester is highly regarded throughout the British wool industry. It is perhaps best known as the sire of the famous Mule sheep, but among fibre artists and textile makers, it is celebrated for producing beautifully soft, lustrous fleece with outstanding spinning qualities.

The Wool

Bluefaced Leicester wool is classified as a fine longwool. It combines remarkable softness with exceptional lustre, creating smooth yarns that drape beautifully and showcase stitch definition.

Its long staple length makes it one of the easiest British fibres to spin, while the silky handle is comfortable enough to wear next to the skin.
